DOODLES a brand new little anthead book

i was always kind of bummed out that these pieces where lost forever and now i feel like they're back. i bought a copy of this in paper back for myself before i offered it for sale, i just received it today and i'm very impressed. it's small due to the fact that only moderately sized images of the old works exist, but it's affordable and available in both paperback and hardcover.

as many people know, i am not a fan of reproductions and promise i will not be hawking a new art book every month that is merely a recap of the month's work [i post that stuff for all to enjoy and feel that the people who buy the pieces should know that the person up the street doesn't have it on a coffee mug or t shirt] i feel that this is less of a reprinting and more of a reconnection.

"the hospital drawings" and the story behind them

the above pieces are from a series now known as "the hospital drawings" about 45 drawings / paintings done between march 17th and april 20th 2014 [all have been purchased and are in private collections internationally] when i was hospitalized with Necrotizing Fasciitis or "flesh eating bacteria". i haven't really discussed this in much detail but will now give a brief outline of the ordeal

on ,march 16th i went to the emergency room with a high fever, nausea and the most excruciating pain ive ever experienced in the shin area of my right leg. [it felt like being constantly burned] a blood test found that i had a very high white blood cell count so i was admitted and started on iv antibiotics. i was septic, was suffering from kidney failure and after being gawked at for 12 hours by what seemed like every doctor in the hospital, i was diagnosed with Necrotizing Fasciitis and emergency surgery was scheduled for the next morning.

eventually i underwent 6 irrigation and debridement surgeries a fasciectomy and a 7th surgery for a split thickness skin graft.[i'll leave it up to the reader to google those but beware they are graphic] during which i spent 4 weeks in a burn unit and after which i spent ten days in a sub acute rehab center to be sure i could walk, climb a few stairs and do other basics before returning home. the past few months have been filled with trips to doctors, surgeons, battling infections and visits from home nursing. i am recovering fairly well now and hopefully only need one more skin graft. i limp around fairly well with a cane and am returning to semi-normalcy. i am thankful to have my life and my leg [many people with NecFasc lose one or the other]

the point of this post [aside from a back story on some watercolor drawings] is to urge you all to quickly brush up on the facts and especially the symptoms of Necrotizing Fasciitis this is a rare and often deadly disease quick action and early detection are of paramount importance. please click here and learn more

practicing art on the cheap - cardboard is king!

i'm always telling beginning artists to practice creating pieces in their favorite medium as often as possible and to branch out and try other unfamiliar methods as they might discover something new that they enjoy. practice not only makes perfect but after a trip to the art store to buy pencils, canvases, bristol board, paper, brushes, pastels and paint one may also find that practice makes you broke. in this series of posts i'll be mentioning tips i've found for practicing on a shoe string budget.

cardboard is king!

cardboard is everywhere and thanks to recycling its usually separated from the nasty garbage behind any restaurant or supermarket. most businesses are more than happy to give you all you can carry in your hot little hands for free. simply take it home and cut it into workable panels

and you're ready to start painting
there's no priming or preparation needed. white cardboard is also great for ink, marker, watercolor, pastels and any other medium you might use on paper.

cardboard can also be made into a practice canvas board of sorts. theres a little preparation and a tiny investment involved but you'll save loads of dough in the long run. heres what you'll need

piece of cardboard - free
old sheet or pillow case - free unless you don't have one then about 3$ at a goodwill
school glue - 3 bottles for a 1$ at the dollar store
interior latex primer - 10$/gallon

simply cut a piece of linen slightly larger than the piece of cardboard, brush a layer of school glue on the cardboard and press the linen on it, smoothing out  any wrinkles with your hand. after the glue dries brush on a coat of primer and let that dry and you have a very affordable canvas board-like practice surface. i used this process on these pieces that i made back in 2007 for a free art exhibit in germany

what about buckling? cardboard does bend and warp when you paint on it but if you allow it to dry flat on its back, it generally flattens back out when its dry. the bit of warp left can simply be corrected by bending the piece flat, a layer of acrylic paint usually keeps the front from showing bends and if they're there who cares? a little distress gives the piece more character.

not just corrugated the cardboard that's left from an empty cereal or mac and cheese box can also be painted on and makes a flexible and durable piece that's easy to frame. this was painted on an empty cereal box:
so go paint on some cardboard and keep it out of the landfill
